| bkottmann's Full Review: Lenovo ThinkPad 600 (264585U) PC Notebook |
My Thinkpad 600E has everything onboard...even two of some things! Yet they all work together with nary a Blue Screen of Death in sight. Since I mainly use the computer on a LAN, a 3COM 56K/10-100 Ethernet combo PCMIA card is used for communication. A simple command in my autoexec.bat file disabled the internal modem, and programs in the Start menu can en/disable the modem as well. Communication is quick and stable. My download times are just as fast as the desktops nearby. Speaking of desktops, I was a little wary of the screen quality, but found it to be exceptional.
One of my pet peeves in this day and age is including a built in floppy. (!) You might was well add a 5 1/4 disk as well. I haven't used a floppy in years, and do not want the extra weight. Indeed, my ZIP drives attaches to the back and gives me all the portable storage space I need. The pointing device on the keyboard is a bit cumbersome to use, but you can attach a mouse in back for heavy duty point and click sessions.
The hard drive is enormous, but power users should add at least another 64 Meg of RAM. The default 64 Meg is quickly used up by Windows and an application or two. People who like to write in Word, surf the web, and have their email open at the same time will soon find themselves paging to the disk for extra memory.
I chose the IBM for price, which may sound surprising. However, I have found that paying for quality monitors and laptops is the way to go. You'll soon earn back in the money with years of useful life. I expect the PIII 500 to be chugging along well into the next millenium. Something I can't say for the "bargain" laptop I last used, which set off the smoke alarm...because it caught on fire. (!)
I advise picking up the fully loaded model. If you really, really must use a floppy you can pick up an external drive, but why not get a ZIP instead?! Add at least another 64 Meg of RAM unless you'll only be using your laptop for one main program. This machine is powerful enough to be your main computer, and an external mouse and keyboard make it handy to use at your desk for extended periods. And yes, there is a port for an external monitor if you must have that 21" monitor to anchor your desk.
