This laptop is just the right size and has an excellent configuration. The keyboard isn't too small and the keys respond very well. Part of me would prefer a touch pad to the little joystick in the middle of the keyboard, but it does work well.
I'm not going to review performance. You want to know about performance, check the processor stats. This works fine for me and I am a professional programmer who uses the laptop all day long.
Before I had this laptop, I had a Toshiba 750. I liked it, but it was heavy. I have a 1 1/2 hour commute to work and lugging this thing from the train to the subway gets to you after a while. The switch from the Toshiba to the IBM, may have bought my back another 10 years of service.
If you like an ultra thin computer, but don't like having to lug around the external drives, you should consider the IBM 600E as an alternative. It's fairly light an thin and has room for one drive built in. You can swap out the CD-ROM or DVD for a floppy drive.
The battery doesn't last as long on my IBM as it did on my Toshiba. I get about 2 to 2 1/2 hour s of time on a charge. I haven't pushed it to the limit, so it may actually be more than that. On the Toshiba I had over 3 hours of battery power.
The sound is pretty good. I plug in my head phones and listen to the radio across the internet or CDs for most of the day. The speakers can produce decent sound, but volume is minimal. What do you expect from 3/4 inch speakers crammed into a laptop. The microphone is just as good as any other built in computer microphone I have ever used. (i.e. you have to get close to the mic to really be heard.)
The screen resolution is great. I get crisp clean pictures and I can see the screen at many different angles.
The area in front of the keyboard provides a perfect wrist rest. The computer is just the right thicknes for typing. The Toshiba was a little high and got to my wrists after a while.
Down sides: I don't like were they have located the insert, delete, home and end keys. I am used to them being either on the lower right or just to the right of the back space key. Having it in the upper right has made adjusting difficult at times.
The battery life could be a little longer. I may have to play with the power settings to get it to last a little longer, but I don't think 3 hours is too much to ask for.
There are 2 latches, one on each side used to close the laptop. This means you can't easily open it with one hand. I prefer the center claps to the side latches.
-- Update --
My lease is nearly up on this beauty. I've had it for 18 months and I have had little to no problems with it. I'm going to hate to give it up. Unfortunately, I don't own it. The company I work for holds the lease. Hopefully they will have another IBM available for me. I am truly pleased with this laptop.
