I just received an IBM ThinkPad 600X a couple of weeks ago to replace my ThinkPad 600E. I always get a little wary whenever I have something that is working well with something new. I always ask, "Why rock the boat?" Well my employer thinks otherwise so I made the switch. It has proven to be a great move as the 600X continues to impress me.
The computer has loads of power supplied by its 650-MHz mobile Pentium III processor and 128MB of memory. It has a 12 gig hard drive, which is plenty of room for all of the big graphics and presentations that I have to tote around with me. The 600X has a 13.3-inch TFT display that really displays quite a crisp picture, sparing me from the bad eye strain I have experienced with other laptop screens.
Something else that this computer has that I haven't had on any of my other machines is a 6X DVD drive. I must admit I have already tried out a couple of movies on it and can honestly say that they are watchable when the 600x is plugged in with its external power supply.
Speaking of power, the battery lasts on the average, around 3 hours, which is remarkably better than any other laptop I have owned. There is nothing worse than running out of power right in the middle of a project. Of course I always recommend getting a second battery for the computer.
Also, do yourself a favor if you are using this in an office setting as well as traveling with it, by getting the docking station if at all possible. This lets you hook the laptop into a nice, big monitor and lets you use a full size keyboard and a mouse.
In terms of things that I would change about the 600X in a perfect world. Well, I wish the DVD Drive and the Floppy Drive were hot swappable. The way IBM designed it, you need to put the laptop into suspend mode before swapping the drives. Some engineer/designer out there wasn't thinking when they overlooked this.
Besides that, I have little problems with the 600X and would highly recommend it. Portable computing power is once again defined by the IBM ThinkPad Series.
