I started repping a Windows based software product and needed a laptop to do client demos. I picked up a IBM ThinkPad A20m - which is the smaller cousin of the A20p - 6mb hard drive, 500 Mhz P III chipset - (and about $2,000 less than the A20p).
I was looking to IBM for total snob appeal, thinking that the IBM name would add credibility to my presentations.
Yep, Big Blue mistique still works. Clients are impressed with the unit -sales are booming. (No one can tell that I'm using an A20p or A20m.)
Of course it's no Macintosh, but I've integrated it into my home ethernet Mac network and except for some initial software problems with Windows 2000 - it's really stable and works well. Don't try to use third party PC/MCA cards - go with the 3Com units IBM supports - regardless of what the third party groups claim.
There were some other manufacturer's models that had similar configurations and lower prices - but if you need to impress clients - I do think the IBM name adds credibility - and that has significant value.
There's nothing better than doing a presentation to a group and turning your back for a second to find someone at your laptop saying "Hey guys look at this . . ."
