| mrbean17's Full Review: Sony VAIO F540 PC Notebook |
I bought this notebook mainly for school. I didn't really need something that is ultra-thin, but I did want something that had the disk and DVD-Rom drives built in. The Sony PCG-F540 just happened to fit the bill. I installed Linux on the computer in addition to Windows 98 SE that came installed on the computer. There seems to be some video problems when running Windows where the certain windows lefts a footprint behind after being closed. For some reason, the problem has actually began to go away after using it now for 10 months. The video works perfectly in Linux though. The thing I really like about this notebook is the large TFT screen; I need to stare at it for over 8 hours a day and my eyes don't get tired at all. The DVD-Rom is a nice feature but not totally necessary. I upgraded the RAM to 196MB and the performance is much better, installation of the RAM was simple and straightforward. , One of the great things about a Sony notebook is that it comes with a IEEE-1394 or Firewire port. It's great for people who want to transfer video from of digital camcorder or camera to their notebook. It apparently has transfer rates that are 40 times of USB. I ran out of storage space on the harddrive some time ago and bought a 80GB Firewire harddrive which is great for storing some programs that I use only when I'm at home. The battery issue is not a major concern since I run the computer through the A/C adapter most of the time, when run on batteries alone, it lasts about 2 hours, which is quite sufficient. It's not the lightest notebook, but I really like the fact that everything is built in.
