If everyday was filled with sunshine, if everyone could live happily with each other morning, noon and night, life would be beautiful. Unfortunately, our lives are far from perfect.
However, after opening the box and slowly pulling out this laptop, I couldn't help being taken away, only if for a few fleeting moments, by the sheer beauty of this laptop. Sony Computing has come a long way from designing video and audio products to electronics and now this piece of art work.
The XG-29 is sheer elegence in design and function. It has everything that you can look for in a computer, inclusive of desktops. Not only is it fast with a PIII 750 mhz processor, its display is large, bright and crisp. It is a toy as much as it is a tool. I can watch a DVD movie on the airplane while doing some work, or I can connect it to my camcorder through the i-link port, producing home videos on the coffee table at home.
The Sony laptop prices are up there with the IBM Thinkpads. However, where many laptop companies try to emulate the Thinkpads, Sony has produced laptops that actually rival the Thinkpads. I also own an old museum piece called the IBM Thinkpad 701C, the "butterfly." I don't use it any more. Actually, I stopped using it about four years ago. I just never got tired of closing and opening the lid as the keyboard retracted and expanded.
The Sony Vaio PCG-XG29 gives me same sort of satisfaction. I just wish the warranty was as long as the IBM Thinkpads. The Sony has a one year warranty as opposed to a three year warranty from IBM. By the third year of ownership, the Thinkpad was not worth the money that the service people at IBM put into it. Nevertheless, it was satisfying to know that IBM knew that it was valuable to me.
The warranty is my only gripe; if you pay that much, not only should you expect as much, but you should also receive as much. Sony should start offering a three year warranty.
Otherwise, I would rate this machine an enthusiastic "buy."
