Pros: Great screen, updated to XP pretty easily, Sony support was reasonable.
Cons: Replaced HD 2x and motherboard (under warranty). Loud fan/disc drive. Sony battery life is poor.
The Bottom Line: The Vaio is a great machine and a worthy road warrior. While not perfect, it blows away the Dells, HPs and Compaqs. Its only competition is Toshiba and IBM.

| kht2002's Full Review: Sony VAIO XG29 PC Notebook |
I bought my Vaio pcg-xg29 in January, 2001 on ubid.com as a new laptop, although it had already been superceded by that point. I installed the maximum RAM possible (256K). I had some issues early on, including an annoying hard drive failure and ultimately a motherboard replacement when display issues could not be resolved. All these were handled at no cost under the 1 year warranty. Sony service was pretty good, although time consuming getting them to agree to replace the motherboard. The computer has gone all over the world, blown out an internal modem in a lightning storm in Sweden (I bought but never installed the internal modem as I had a pcmcia backup), been run 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year, and the only issue is a somewhat loud disc drive and not great battery life w/ Sony batteries. A big improvement was upgrading the Win98 OS to XP Home, and dumping IE for Firefox -- it was like getting a new machine!!! Then recently I was thinking about buying a new laptop when I found a new higher output (4000 mamp) battery on ebay -- now I can work wirelessly anywhere for 3 plus hours at a time using the power management capabilities. Pretty great machine, even if it was a little pricey when purchased (just bought an Acer laptop for my wife that has way more features and is lighter for about 1/3 what I paid for this machine). Anyway, I'm a believer...and I think this little guy still has quite a few miles in him...
