I purchased this machine after returning a Compaq "cutting edge" notebook that gave me nothing but headaches. I was first impressed by it's display, then I read the spec sheet. How they squeeze an 18 GB hard drive, a DVD, and a PIII chip in the same chassis without melting the case is a wonder. The machine is not without a few question marks, however. The computer automatically opens an "intercooler" flap when the display is opened, a necessity because the unit doesn't use a fan for cooling. This took some getting used to. Also, the ports are a bit lacking, unless you buy the expansion port, then you have more ports than you'll probably ever use. Both of these, for the true power user, are questions, not problems. The only heartburn I have is with the keyboard - it feels sloppy and doesn't give the tactile feedback necessary for quick typing. Also, what's up the arrow keys, an overlay? My last gripe is why only 2.5 MB of video memory? This machine does a LOT with that 2.5, but why not throw a big graphics card in there.
Now that I'm done complaining, let me emphasize the machine's high points. It is fast, blazingly fast. It has plenty of memory in it's base configuration to satisfy most graphics heavy applications. The display, while not 15", is extremely clear and sharp - you almost forget you're looking at an LCD display. But the the real thumbs-up goes to the ease of set up and use. What I wasn't able to accomplish in three days on the Compaq, I was able to do in three hours on the Sony. The is a very user-friendly machine. Out of the box and working in a few minutes, with NO hardware or software conflicts. Bottom line - if you need a desktop computer you can lug around with you, here's your machine.
