OK, let me start by saying that I am the type of user who chooses portability over power. My previous laptops were Librettos (may they rest in peace) then the recent Portege 3110 and now this bad boy. They have change everything I complained about the 3110 and now this is simply awesome. Let's examine a few of these things.
They've given the video memory 8MB! Now we can play games, do some light 3D modeling, whatever. The previous Portege only had like 1.5 MB.
We have 1024x768 Resolution on a larger clearer screen. Thank god! The display on the laptop is stunning, very usable in all lighting conditions, and we are now swimming in a 1024 config. Great!
2 STACKED PC card slots. This is huge, now we can all go buy Realport cards and not have to worry! But wait, they've already got a very functional 56K on board and the LAN adapter is integrated in the mini-dock. Now I've got the room to expand but lost the need! BTW, they fixed the crappy modem pop-out adapter to a flushmounted straight plug-in jack. Much nicer, I must say.
I saw another epinion expressing his problems with this line. I am also an IT analyst and recommend Toshiba's on a daily basis. The hardware is always up to par, and when there IS a problem, it does get taken care of. Toshiba is the pioneer for laptops, and they will always be the leader. I must admit, I almost went to Sony at times, but take a look at Toshiba's support pages and easy accessibility to file downloads! It's too much to pass up.
Right now I am running a 20GB hard drive with 4 OS's separated by System Commander 2000. All the systems run smoothly, with Whistler actually detecting many things 2000 couldnt. But I must stress that with any laptop purchase, you MUST visit the vendor site immediately to patch it up! Laptops sit on shelves and get old, even new ones! Updates come out daily. Fix the driver issues before customizing and installing software. Then you're laptop will be humming and you can cruise along anywhere!
I recommend this laptop to anyone who also cherishes weight over speed. But seriously, is a P3 600 that slow?
