I rarely get to use the Tecra 8100 as an end user but I do have the privilege to service and set them up for our users. I work in an environment with about 1200 users. We have approximately 600 new Tecra 8100 in the building. I provide all the hardware service for these systems and in nearly six months of continuous service I have found very few problems with the unit.
I have run into only one repeat problem, it has occurred in maybe 1% of the notebooks we have put into service. Part of the heat sync and fan on a small handful of systems has been found to rub and make some noise. It sounds as if there is something caught in the fan but the nice thing is it is a quick and simple five-minute fix that does not require the removal of even one screw.
The Tecra 8100 is a joy to work on and is a very good design from Toshiba. Very few notebooks in the industry are this easy to service and do field replacements on. It takes me easily half as long to disassemble and rebuild a Tecra notebook as it does an IBM, Compaq, or Dell notebook product.
Toshiba provides a good warranty and stands behind their products. The Tecra 8100 is no exception. People like myself who repair computer systems for a living appreciate a company that provides good support and service after the sale.
The Tecra 8100 is a strong robust system with a lot of great features. You will probably never have a hardware problem with this machine but if you do it is usually a quick and easy fix.
