| kam61799's Full Review: Toshiba Tecra 8100 (PT810U-12CP7) PC Notebook |
I recently picked up this machine for around $3,500 and do realize that in this day and age that is a pretty high price to pay for a quality laptop computer. But just take a look at the specs: PIII, 100 mhz bus, DVD, 128 Mg, 12 gig hardrive, etc. In my mind that is getting your money's worth. I should give out a warning here. I am a devout Toshiba user. This make my third Tosh laptop (my first from the Tecra seris), but this should be taken as a good indication; I am a customer who has been repeatedly satisfied with both the product and service I have gotten from Toshiba.
The total package is one term that comes to mind again and again in thinking about this computer. I, for one, love having everything I need at my fingertips and this is the case with the 8100. The drives are internal and so there is not need to lug around pesky cables and the harddrive is so massive I seriously doubt most people will find any reason to carry around disks or mass storage options (zip drives, etc.)
The screen size (14.1) is pleasant the eyes, the picture is sharp and clear, and the keyboard is spacious and easy to use. The weight of the computer is almost negligable at around 7 pounds and the total package is quite slim at around 2 inches. I do realize for you travelling tyes out there this probably sounds ludicrous, but remember I am the type of person who like to have everything at his finger tips. With on of those super thin ultra portables out there you have to deal with all those extranal drives and what not.
The machine came preloaded with Win 98SE, but I quickly reformatted the harddisk and installed Windows 2000. I believe this has made my experience with the 8100 more pleasant, but before I get started on a Windows 2000 opinion let me say a few more words about this great machine.
If speed is what you need you have it here. To be completely honest this computer has much more power than I really need. Im sure I could have spent almost a grand less and still ended up with a machine that would get my work done, but people don't just want to get from point A to point B, that why there are sports cars on the roads next to those prcatical subcompacts. Don't take too much from my feeble metaphor, however. This laptop is definately not a sports car. It is not flashy like some of those ultraportables out there, it is in no way impractical or incapable of serious use, and is has way to much trunk space. This computer is more like an Mercedes Benz E-55 or BMW M5: both are four door sedans that can comfortably seat fize people, yet both can still make it from 0 to 60 faster than any Camaro.
DVD-Rom is great and I don't have to tell you that. It nice to be able to pop in a movie while on the go and this computer's 14.1 inch screen makes the experience all the more pleasing. Don't expect to experience any system slowdown with this machine (although Windows 2000 plays a major role in the multitasking success of my system) as the RAM included is more than sufficient for almost any pursuit.
I would like to throw in a few words about stability, but to be hones my experience with this machine is not quite that along yet. I have had it for only a couple of week. For what it is worth I havn't had any problems yet, and based on the advice of others I don't expect much in the future.
If you are the type of person who needs a true desktop replacement in a good sized laptop package this is definately the computer for you. If you are the type of person who needs both power and portability this is definately the computer for you. And if you are the type of person who like to have the best of anything I feel that this is most likely the computer for you.
