| kkeeton's Full Review: Toshiba Tecra 8100 (PT810U-12CP7) PC Notebook |
I am a Computer Technician with a software company. We have been using the Toshiba line for about 2 years now. Here is a rundown, we are a small image company and have users from high-end developers to casual every day outlook users. This laptop seems to do well on either end. Lets start from the tangible side. Positives The key board rocks it has big keys and is nice the only better seen is the ergonomic ones. The only down side is the ‘start’ key is located on the upper right. The mouse will I hate the nubble mice they suck that's all there is to that (just bring your own mouse and install it) There is one crazy part the start button it on the upper right. I didn’t like that. We only get dvd drive and it is located on the right (spare battery capable) nice job there. Modem jack is also on the right. There is one of those headphone jack to component video out jacks on the right as well. I hate this it is just a part to loose. (Still works however) On the back we start out with one usb with a cheesy plastic cover (rips off in like a week) Then a uncovered vga adapter (i like the dust cover) power located on right back. Now on the 8000 we had a few PCB board breaks because of rough play with the power plug. So far nothing with the 8100. On left is PC slot and sound out and mic in plug. Along with the power button. There is a cheesy feeling lock lever in front for the lid. There is a hot swap bay with your cd/dvd and the extra external floppy this is well done and seems to hold up to the wear.
The laptop comes equipped with the standard function keys where you can change the monitor output and the power usage. However it won’t display on a LCD or on the screens, which monitor you have chosen. When you do lots of presentations this can be a pain.
The boot up gives you a nice advertisement logo with a boot option (choose boot device) The bios if you care looks like a 8082 bios it’s kinds scary looking with none to little tweaking to be done (but hey it’s a laptop).
Now as far as the build cd’s go you can order with 98/2000 I recommend 2000 just because it will do everything you want with the stability of NT. The cd’s are ok they come with a minimal amount of Toshiba garbage. You get a how to use and some other documentation but not much cheesy programs. We ship the laptop with the build only it works so good around here. As far as individual OS use I cant rate that we have had no problems with STOP errors or Blue Screens sometimes related to a mobile processor getting bad voltage or just being so small and under cooled. The build in modem works great, never seen much of a problem there. In the OS/Hardware area it is really strong. I have never seen much of a problem that the laptop can be blamed for.
Battery life. It is good, as long as all you are doing is typing in word. Average use is 1:30 with hard drive 3:00 w/o hard drive spinning. DVD movie watching? Well that is limited to 1 hour that sucks, but hey just get a second battery. The charge lasts well and we haven’t had to replace batteries yet on anything.
Over all I really like this laptop, I have chosen to buy one for my own however I am going to get the 8200 just because I like new stuff. (I will have a review one day for that) I recommend buying it, it holds up in the corporate work place yet it is a powerhouse for getting things done.
