I have a Palm Pilot Personal with the 2MB/infrared/3.0 upgrade. I've tried several different cases/covers for my Pilot. There's the plastic one that's just a snap on cover to protect the screen; flimsy and obtrusive. A leather one that opened like a book with a snap cover; if the cover was closed while the Pilot was still powered on, it would press the scroll buttons and keep the Pilot running. Then I went to the leather belt clip model with a Velcro top; convenient but not very rugged. I've dropped my Pilot a few times. At least once from about 3 feet onto a tiled floor. Enough of an impact to jar the memory card loose and turn my data to vapor.
I've purchased Concept Kitchen products before and loved their usefulness and innovation; the screen protective appliques, the "Karma cloth" to clean the screen, the fingertip stylus. So I was excited when I heard about their Bumper protective case. I bought one from Best Buy and anxiously slipped the Pilot into its new portable home.
The rubberized shell made handling the unit feel more secure and the flip up lid thankfully doesn't detach so there's no worry about leaving it behind. There are two places to attach a clip onto; sometimes I wear it around my neck on a lanyard. Plus you have the convenience of a stylus holder on both sides and a window at the top so the infrared port can still be utilized. When the lid's closed its even somewhat waterproof (liquids will have a difficult time seeping into the Bumper).
It's just about perfect. I say "just about" because the very nature of the Bumper's ability to wrap around your Pilot like a scuba suit, makes it awkward to remove from the suit for HotSyncing. When removing the Pilot, you have to flex the Bumper's case at the two lower corners. With my Pilot, this causes the Bumper's edge to catch on the gap between the front and back half of the Pilot's shell. I'm afraid that might someday either rip the Bumper's lip or possibly crack the Pilot's plastic frame. Replacing the Pilot back into the Bumper is somewhat easier than removal, but there's still some flexing on the Bumper's part.
I would have to say that if you're prone to dropping your Pilot or placing it in harms' way (i.e., next to your morning Mountain Dew, anywhere near a child) then this is the case to get. But if you do a lot of HotSyncing, you may want to keep looking for another Pilot protector.
