| rugged14's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Jornada 548 Pocket PC |
The HP Jornada 548 was my first venture into the PDA market. I did a lot of research into the various PDA options and finally decided to go with the Windows OS versus the Palm operating system. I came to the conclusion that the two best pocket PC’s on the market were made by Compaq and HP. I ultimately chose the HP Jornada because of its solid feel and its built-in CF slot unlike the Compaq version which uses a bulky sleeve.
Here are some of the features you’ll find on this pocket PC.
Physical Features
Battery Life
The HP Jornada uses a built-in Lithium-ion battery which provides excellent life. I was able to listen to audio books and MP3 files on my 12-hour flight from the US to Asia and its battery powered me the entire way. This is possible because when listening to MP3 files the HP Jornada has a button on its exterior that allows me to turn off the display screen to save battery power. The battery also charges very quickly when I set it on the stand during the evening.
Screen
The HP screen does offer vivid colors and an excellent display but even when set on outside mode it is somewhat yet not impossible to read outside. To help protect the screen I strongly suggest the HP Pocket PC screen protectors that you can find on Amazon.com for $10.
Software Features
Internet Explorer
I use Avantgo to sync the latest news channels every morning. Throughout the day I am able to read the latest news from the New York Times as well as carry huge amounts of information from various news sources. When hooked up to an internet connection using a CF modem or LAN card you can actually surf the internet with all of its content. It impresses a lot of people whenever I have a recent news article in the palm of my hand.
Outlook Features
I am a user of Microsoft Outlook and I am really pleased with its compatibility with the Pocket PC. I am able to sync all of my emails from my personal computer to my Pocket PC. This is very handy when I am out of the office and I need to refer to an email. Outlook also syncs its calendar, tasks and contacts. This is an invaluable feature for someone who travels a lot.
Windows Media Player
I have downloaded the latest Windows Media 7.1 player. I suggest that you stick with the standard media player that comes with the Pocket PC unless you plan on watching streaming or downloaded videos. The sound quality is determined by the size of the MP3 or WMA file you download. If you want to fit many songs the sound quality may suffer. Unless you are an audiophile you will not notice the difference.
Microsoft Money
I use Microsoft Money 2001 on my personal computer and I am able to transfer all my account information to my Pocket PC. It’s a great feature to have if you want to track your finances when you’re on the go.
Useful Downloads
One of the downloads that I have installed on my Pocket PC are SnoopSoft Dashboard It places several days’ appointments and tasks on your "today" screen along with a desktop-type background and buttons to launch the other programs. Another download that I highly recommend is the GigaBar. This adds a bar at the top of the screen where you can switch between open programs and close programs. It has many other features that you can explore.
