psiebers's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Jornada 680 Pocket PC
I have owned my Hewlett Packard Jornada 680 for close to a year now, and I must say it is one of the greatest out of the box alternatives to lugging around a laptop...
The Jornada 680 is so small but yet stands up to laptops easily. It is equipped with Windows CE and a stripped down office suite. I run Win 98 on my desktop and rely heavily on Outlook 98 for e-mail, calendar and contact management. Synchronizing is a snap! Setting up the device took some time < 1 hour, but it has proven to be extremely stable over the past year.
The Jornada is very sturdy; I dropped it on a few occasions and it got a bit scratched and dented, but it still performs beautifully.
The battery life is about 7 hours, but I bought a spare battery ($90) and now I can go on for 7 extra hours without having to make sure I am near an outlet, or having to worry about losing power in the middle of a trans atlantic flight.
The little keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, but it beats the frustration of learning and using a whole new alphabet like my Palm Pilot forced me to do. The screen acts as an input device as well, and you can jot notes straight on the screen, this is one of the best functions, yet I haven't seen many people use it. The screen resolution is brilliant; it outperforms many laptops' screens I have seen.
I managed to run a small PowerPoint presentation once on it. Standard the Jornada has 16 Mb of combined ram and hard drive storage, but it is upgradeable. I have never touched the limit, but if you get too carried away with PowerPoint presentations you can clog the 16Mb up pretty fast.
I did blow away my competition with my impromptu presentation running off of my Jornada and an Infocus Projector.
One thing I never use is the built in voice recorder. It saves notes and soundfiles as .wav files so you can attach them to e-mails or play them back on your desktop later.
The 56K modem is built in and works great too. The Internet Explorer version does a pretty good job in pulling up webpages (as good as IE gets). The Jornada is networkable, but you have to get an add on network card. I really don't have any need to have my Jornada up on the network since I can do everything by simply synchronizing.
In short: The HP Jornada 680 is a keeper. I would hate to lose it...
