| rpankhurst's Full Review: Handspring Visor Prism Handheld |
There are some excellent reviews here. So as not to go over the same ground I will provide some additional points from the perspective of a Visor Deluxe user upgrading to the Prism.
I have a Visor Deluxe with the optional backup module using USB on both Win 98 and Win 2K.
I unpacked the Prism, charged it for two hours, refreshed the back up on my back up module from my current Visor Deluxe, restored the new back up onto the Prism and then hotsynched! I was done!
Some of the apps were not color compatible (mostly some older games like Galax and Launcher III) but no big deal as IMHO the newer color games and software rock.
In terms of other Visor upgrade stuff read on:
1) I did not have to change desktop software, although I did have the latest version from the Handspring website
2) The existing USB travel cable still works, but only to hotsync not to charge
3) Writeright screen protectors do not work well. They make the screen hazy and multicolor like they are some kind of lens.
4) Battery life is better than I expected. I was going through a set of AAAs in about 8-10 days on my Visor deluxe. I use between 10 and 20 % of the battery in a day, including 3-4 hotsyncs with Avantgo
5) The hotsyncs seem faster than a USB Visor, probably due to the increased CPU speed
6) What review would be complete without a discussion of overclocking. I used CruiseControl 1.01 on "Fast" and benchmarked the Prism at 266% using Benchmark 1.5. I also seems much faster on "Fast" but really sucks battery. Could be good for games and/or videos later.
7) Delivery. I ordered it at about 4pm CST on the day of release (Monday) with the Express shipping option and received it Wednesday morning. Awesome compared to first Visor release and definitely world class. I did not receive the Travel charger I ordered. The packing slip said it was on backorder.
Needless to say I love it, the screen is a huge improvement over the black and green in normal light and out of this world better in the dark. I have not had a chance to use it in full sunlight yet. I can't wait for the wireless data and/or cellphone Springboards.
