bronzefury's Full Review: Handspring Visor Pro Handheld
i've had the visor pro for 2 months now and really love it. one of the great features of the visor product line is their expandability. it can become more than an organizer because of the springboard slot. no other PDA or palm PC can offer that!
for example, i now have about 80 MB on my device because it can interface to Smart Media cards. The smart media card can be used to store both applications and data for those applications (courtesy of Memplug). I use the same smart media cards for digital photography, too!
if you have compact flash or sony memory stick, visor's can use it also. once again, visor's are very flexible. i don't think any of the other Palm OS devices can do that (or pocket PCs for that matter).
i've just bought an mp3 player springboard module which can be used with the visor or seperately. dontcha jus' love it! technology sure has come a long way.
i was considering the HP jornada or any of the Palm PCs but they appeared too big and bulky. Palm devices tend to be smaller but not small enough to make it unusable.
Pocket PC software tends to be code heavy meaning that there are so many lines of software to run. ofcourse, it would need/require a powerful processor just to keep up.
Palm OS rules since it has the most applications written for it - thanks to Palm OSes time to market - the OS been around longer than pocket PC platform.
As far as I can tell, the Visor Pro can be used for many, normally non-PDA functions, such as displaying powerpoint slides for school or work, GPS device for finding restaurants, mp3 player, digital camera, cell phone, wireless and wireline modem, e-books, etc.. (the list goes on, and on, and on...)
I have read other critics mention negatively about the body style of the handspring visor being the same, boring design as their first product line. But, you gotta remember, many products have been built to use that same body style (cases, portable keyboards, etc..) that it would be rather silly to keep changing the design shell. The shell design is attractively simple (and practical).
In this day and age where product cycles seem to get shorter and shorter, you would want a product that will last you a long time. My advice would be to look for a product that is readily useful and expandable into the future. The Visor is all of that and more!
