First the basics, I've wanted a Palm Connected Organizer since the "PalmPilot" first came out, so in 1999, I could finally afford the 1998 model - the Palm III.
The Palm itself is a great little gadget, of course I'm someone who loves gadgets. It's helped me rid myself of those tiny bits of paper I'd have on my desk or in my pocket - and learning graffiti is easier that trying to decipher my scribbled thoughts on crumpled paper! I really need a device that reminds me to "Eat lunch", "Go home", or "Meet with supervisor", as I get pulled in so many different directions each day, it's hard to remember which way is up.
I'm a Mac user, so I also needed the "MacPac" an extra cost 3Com felt us Mac users should have to pay, it gets you a converter that makes the serial port on the HotSync cradle connect to the serial port of a Mac, and a CD ROM with the desktop software that you can download for free. (I could have build the converter with $3.00 worth of Radio Shack parts if I had a schematic.)
The Mac software is the old Claris Organizer application, so it's pretty nice, there's a number of features that could be added, perhaps they'll be addressed in future versions. Being a Mac user you don't get the full use of the Palm's email or expense applications as Windows users do, there may be some 3rd party solutions, but that's another added expense.
Now, the Palm III isn't USB friendly without an adapter (more money) and it's pretty easily breakable (just drop it) I'm of the opinion that you should be able to drop it or sit on it without completely destroying it. I'd highly recommend the purchase of a good case.
If I was buying today, I'd go with a HandSpring Visor, they're cheaper that the 3Com devices, run the Palm OS (with some enhancements) offer more expandability, and include a USB connection, besides that though, I think the Palm III is a top notch organizer.
