| Riken's Full Review: Palm IIIx Handheld |
I have had the Palm IIIx for almost a year. My wife bought it for me for Christmas last year. I told her I wanted an electronic organizer just to keep phone numbers and small notes. The Palm has become much more to me than an electronic phonebook. It is in fact, my memory. I rely on the Palm to remind me of most everything. Appointments, phone numbers, dates, items I need to order, items I have ordered, inventory, you name it, it is on my Palm.
It is very user friendly, just tap in the info you need to keep, then at a tap, recall it when you need it. The handwriting recognition software isn't hard to learn at all. It is very close to natural writing. Most letters are as you would normally write them. The other letters are very close. Example, the letter "T" is written as "7." There are separate screens for numerals and letters.
People complain about the small amount of memory. It has 4 megs, expandable to 8. I find 4 more than enough. How much is enough? I suppose if they came out with PDA's in the gig range, some would claim everything else was obsolete. On my Palm, I have probably 400 phone numbers, 50 to do lists, hundreds of notes, appointments and jobs set almost daily, some over a year away. It will remind me of my anniversary, wife and kids birthdays. (hey, I have 5 kids. I need a little help, okay?) On top of all that, I have a program that allows me to write in my own handwriting, on the screen, just like pen and paper and import it into a list, or module of my choice. It comes out as type. That was downloaded free off of the internet. There are literally thousands of free programs to be had, from several internet sites. You load these from your computer to your Palm via a "hotsync" cradle, that is attached to a serial port on your computer.
I also have several games, the ENTIRE, PDR. Physicians desk reference, which has every prescription drug made, what it does, the correct dosages and it's interactions and possible side effects and other issues. I am not a Doctor. I loaded it as a novelty. I found it is quite usefull actually. Like I said, I have 5 kids, I can now just tap in what the pediatrician prescribed and know exactly what my kids are being given. Three clocks, alarms, a setup called "plamboy," that plays gameboy games, (many free to download,) Sound utilities, I can use the Palm as a remote control for my T.V's, A time clock that is made for contractors, tells the time you spent on specific jobs, 3 calculators, mapopolis, which allows me to download a map of ANY city or town and view it off of the palm, zoom in to the exact block if you need, or out to the entire city and surrounding area, (Also free off the internet.) Memory? I still have 950k. Like I said, 4 meg is plenty.
People daily hear me say, "let me check my Palm." Most know by now what I mean, some also have them. I would not hesitate to recommend the IIIx to anyone. Now, the price is right. It has plenty of memory, the two AAA batteries that power it last me over a month. Get one and you will seem like a whiz over the phone, you can recall facts and figures with amazing speed. Just don't tell the people you are talking to that you carry your memory in your pocket.
