Pros: Just the right size memory. Its as handy as any other Palm but not as expensive. Its all you ever need (who needs color?)
Cons: too bulky compared to the V series. Resets a lot , but then again most palms do.

| fknandy's Full Review: Palm IIIx Handheld |
Palm has the sensibility, or should I say the marketing know-how to release Palm pilots with different specs, uncapable of upgrades, so as to create a specific model for a specific type of person.
The Palm IIIx is no exception. Released with the Palm V and the IIIe, the IIIx was the middle ground. The Palm V was for the business man and the techie who didnt care if he needed that small space, and the IIIe for the safe buyer, who is scared to invest in a PDA too much, yet is willing to spare a hundred dollars to try it out.
So, for who then is the Palm IIIx? It is for that person, who is not rich enough to spend for a Palm V and not be sure if he really needs it, nor is unsure enough to buy a Palm which is not upgradable. It is for that person who, although not certain if he really needs a Palm, is open enough to the possibility that he will like it, and infact, upgrade its OS in the future.
In fact, among the three, it is the only one with an upgradable OS. I bought mine exactly with this in consideration. The only advantage of the Palm V was the size. It had a smaller memory (2mb compared to the IIIx's 4mb). The IIIe had no size advantage(it has the same body), unless ofcourse you fancy the SPECIAL EDITION IIIe with transparent casing.
In the long run however, price will not be the advantage of the IIIe to the IIIx. Since in a few months time, or in a year's time, the OS of the IIIe will not be at par with the world standard. You will be tempted to buy a new palm, whereas the IIIx OS can be upgradeable.
Memory wise, 4 meg is just enough for a normal/ semi-techie/ person like myself. I could barely fill it the first few months, and later, could fill it up without any need for more space. 2 meg would only make you more critical of the programs you download. 8meg in the IIIxe and Vx is for the hard core palm users.
In short, its the product to buy when you are not sure which product to buy, but sure you want to buy a Palm. It can be keep being up to date in a years time, and can be sold for a reasonable price when you get tired of it.
