After working and training in a large telecommunications business for 4 years I was pretty savvy with my Franklin planner. There wasn't a soul on this Earth that could have gotten my planner out of my hands for anything. I am now a stay at home mom and I recently started working part time. My husband works a weird shift of 4 10-hour days, those days rotating by the month.
Ok, so you're wondering why a SAHM would need the use of a planner, right? Right. Ask my step-daughter. I forgot to pick her up at school one day. Oops! Ask my mother. I can't make plans to save my soul because the kids decided to draw me a nice picture on my planner pages. I can't read a thing!
A friend of mine at work had gotten a Palm Pilot IIIxe and said he loved it. Couldn't live without it. I was interested immediately. He sat down and showed me what it could do and how easy it was to do these fancy things. I was truly amazed. I could plan my time by the day, the week or the month. I could even plan it for a few years down the road! (That will come in handy when I'm trying to plan a surprise anniversary trip for my husband in 3 more years!)
The advantages I see in having a Palm Pilot IIIxe versus my old Franklin is that this will fit in my purse comfortably. No more zipping and unzipping the cover, no more flipping pages endlessly, no more pop or coffee stains on the paper, no more lost pens and no more refills to buy every year! On the flip side, the screen can be a little difficult to read if you're not in the "right light". As far as I can tell there is no illumination for night function. Even though I'm still pretty new with this new gadget, I still haven't found a way to HotSync my husband and I's information in the datebook. We were hoping it would mash both of our schedules together after we entered the information so we would each have the same. To the best of our ability, this hasn't happened. But that's ok, we can live with it. We just have to enter it manually.
Another good point for the IIIxe is that you can enter the information on your PC and then HotSync it. It can be a little tedious using the Stylus to tap each letter on the "keyboard". I still haven't mastered that Graffiti thing yet either! ;-)
If you're in the market for a convenient way to keep track of information I would greatly recommend the Palm Pilot IIIxe. With 8 MB of memory you can't go wrong. I personally thought $249 was a little on the high side at first but now that I see what it can do, the price fits. You can find this product at any electronics store.
