why buy a palm pilot?
if you're looking at opinions, i'm sure that you'reo n the brink of buying one. you're probably thinking "i can always use a planner." a palm pilot isn't just a day planner or a rolodex or a to do list. with so many different programs, a palm pilot can be extremely versatile. you can have the Bible on it (if you're religious), a dictionary, the periodic table or even the New York Times!
why a palm IIIxe?
you're probably trying to decide between a visor deluxe or a palm IIIxe, at least i was. I'll tell you why I chose the palm IIIxe over the visor deluxe. First off, being a college student w/o much of an income, the palm IIIxe is about $50-70 cheaper. (I bought mine for $170 on-line plus shipping). Both the IIIxe and the deluxe have an 8mb memory. Yes, yes, I know the deluxe has a springboard module. It's a great idea, but i didn't really require that. Also, the IIIxe has 2mb flash memory on top of the 8mb. This means that you can upgrade the operating system. This, you can't do on the deluxe. (*note* i'm not an expert at the whole palm platform, so forgive me if i'm wrong, this is just what i understand from reading about the palm IIIxe.) it also seems to have more accessories for it that it's competitors' products.
will i need 8mb?
at first, i didn't think i would need so much memory. i was proven wrong after i bought the IIIxe. with so many different programs online, you'll want to download everything! I've downloaded avantgo (in which i can read the NY times and other newspapers) and vindigo (which is like a city guide.) these programs take a considerable amount of memory, so it's always nice to have a larger memory bank. Besides, for a 2mb visor or a palm m100, you pay around $150! Just pay the extra 50 bucks.
so what makes the palm IIIxe do special?
1) it was inexpensive.
2) has 8mb!
3) easy to hotsync everything
4) keeps everything organized in your life
5) prevents you from being bored in a 1 and 1/2 hour long lecture
6) can buy a keyboard for it and use it to take notes during lecture
7) can have different types of programs that suits your interest on it
8) read the newspaper, get the weather, do whatever you'd like on it
it can't be perfect!
of course, it's not. here are my gripes about it. i really did wish i has an springboard module (expansion port). like what i said, since i'm broke, i couldn't really afford the handspring visor. the stylus that i comes with (the little pen-like stick) is pure plastic. it has no weight to it, it's pretty cheap. the screen can be scratched up (you have to buy a separate screen protector). it doesnt' come w/ rechargeable batteries.
bottom line:
if you need or want a palm pilot for any reason get this! if you have a little more money and want an expansion port, get the visor deluxe. if you have even more money to spend get the palm Vx. If you're a college student like myself who needs to use something to get their life organized, this is the way to go. the palm IIIxe isn't fancy, but it isn't "cheap" either.
