I was an early user of PDA type machines but gave up on them after my last bad experience with a Philips Velo (which was very expensive, bulky and full of bugs). I liked the basic idea of a PDA but found them to be more hassle than benefit and far too expensive for what they were. So for years I went without one. But about 3 months ago, when Palm stock sunk into the low single digits, I started to look into PDAs again. My intent was to determine whether Palm stock was worth buying (I ultimately determined it was, so I write this as a shareholder and a user). I not only sold myself on the stock, I thought the Palm VIIx was a really cool idea. But did it work? I wasn't about to spend $400+ to find out, so I simply watched the stock continue to drop.
Then, one day as I was going through Amazon, I saw that Palm was clearing out its inventory and had cut the prices on the Palm VIIx to under $200, with a $100 rebate. I couldn't resist so I finally bought one.
I was more intrigued with the idea of internet access than in having an organizer and I wasn't disappointed. The Palm VIIx really does give me access to the internet, and email, at all times. I can check my email (either AOL or the Palm.net email) from my backyard, in the car, sitting on the train coming home from work or anywhere else. The network coverage in the SF area is great and I have yet to go somewhere where I didn't have a decent signal. One of the most useful things with this PDA is the ability to get onto mapquest type sites and get driving instructions while on the road. I have read some harsh criticisms of the web clipping technology but I find it to be absolutely adequate. It is not browsing, but it is 100% functional for what I do (email, shopping, news).
The downsides to the Palm VIIx, other than cost of monthly service, are:
*) sometimes very slow processing
*) input of data can be maddening since I am not comfortable with graffitti
*) batteries get used up quicker than I'd like.
But aside from those fairly minor complaints, I think the Palm VIIx is an incredible device at a great price.
