| rwetsel's Full Review: Palm Vx Handheld |
Gone are the days (for me at least) of clunky, square-edged PDA's. I wouldn't part with my beautiful Palm Vx under most any circumstances, it's as much a statement about me, as a digital assistant from heaven!
I received my Palm Vx as a gift from my boss when I was promoted. I had previously owned (and religiously used) a Palm III Professional. At first glance, I could tell that the Vx was far more attractive than my square III pro. It has a slick steel-gray casing and smooth edges all around. The Palm Vx is remarkably thin and light-weight (but not too light as to feel inexpensive). I bought myself a Rhino-skin molded hard cover (highly recommended for protection and looks!) to add to the presentation and wow - I've yet to pull it out in company and not receive a compliment since. The rhino skin protects as well as beautifies, I've dropped my palm on several occasions and sat on it many more - but inside this aluminum case it's nearly indestructible.
As far as functionality is concerned, the Palm Vx is packed. It comes with 8mb of memory onboard (I've got a zillion programs, contacts, appointments, web pages etc. on mine and it's half full!) - plenty. The new processor is far zippier than my old III. The backlight on the Vx is far superior to the backlight on my old Palm. One other nice new advantage is that the Vx runs on a re-chargeable internal battery rather than annoying to replace AA's. Battery life is as good as can be expected, even though it charges itself whenever it's in the cradle (daily for me) so i never have to worry about the batteries. The new cradle by the way, is mostly metal (as compared to all plastic older models) and as i mentioned above, doubles as a recharger. "Syncing" information between your palm and your desktop PC or laptop has never been easier. The new software that came with my Vx automatically connects my palm with Microsoft Outlook (a huge plus for me!), but will just as easily connect you with it's proprietary desktop software (not too shabby at all!!).
I won't go into all of the other features that are provided by the Palm OS and Palm software. There are (literally) a bazillion software applications and upgrades that can spice up your palm, making it more of a personal statement, a customized secretary if you will, as anything else. Not to mention the wide array of hardware add-ons available!!
I'm not sure how I used to live w/o my Palm, and I hope I never have to find out!!
