jrennard's Full Review: TARGUS UNIVERSAL PDA/KEYBOARD CASE - BLACK
Every so often, a product is released that amazes me. The Stowaway keyboards are such an item. They combine function and form into a small package that easily fits into your back jeans pocket.
When I first saw the product, I immediately wanted to buy it but held off. I knew I would be making an emotional decision. Instead, I decided to hold off several months and watch for reviews and user comments. After all, this $99 keyboard is more expensive than most you'd find at CompUSA. I still consider myself an early adapter, but more cautious than my younger days.
After using the product for 3 months, I can say it is simply a delight. Previously, I would either drag my 3lb Sony VAOI notebook around, or use Graffiti on the Visor. The Stowaway allows me to write in places that I normally wouldn't consider. And, I don't have to worry about looking for an electrical outlet to plug the notebook in.
As example, I am now sitting in a coffee shop and writing this review using the Stowaway and Quickword. When I finish, I will hotsync the document to Quickoffice for final review. I have also received comments from friends expressing their delight in taking notes in classes or meetings.
The keyboard carries much of the functionality of a regular keyboard. Obviously, the primary objective was to provide a fully functional keyboard in a small form factor. The company has gone beyond that objective by also including function keys for the built in applications. I was thankful that I only had to install a small software driver.
The Visor snaps into a pull out clip that has two connection prongs that hold the device at a decent angle. I did have trouble initially getting the Visor to clip into these prongs and called technical support for help. They admitted the documentation was sparse on this area and talked me through the proper angle. Since then, I haven't had any problems. I also was very impressed with the support that Targus offers. Incidentally, Targus has added a demo to their website at http://www.targus.com/demo_stowaway.html
The feel of the keyboard is springier than a normal keyboard. The keyboard seems to bounce back a bit when you depress keys. I've gotten use to this effect and hardly give it a second thought. I've never had a problem with repeating or missed keys.
So, what's not to like - very little. For some, they keyboard may pose ergonomic issues. There are no wrist rests or little feet to adjust the height of the keyboard. Personally, I don't find this an issue, as I'm not using the keyboard hours on end. Another possible drawback… gasp...the device only comes in black. I do have friends who insist on color co-coordinating with their cool Visor colors. I took the more practical approach and don't care that it clashes with my ice Visor.
One cautionary note is that some applications don't work with portable keyboards from any vendor. And some applications such as DataViz's Docs to Go work so slowly, you're better off using Graffiti. This was the primary reason I switched to Quickword. DataViz support did indicate they are aware of the problem. The program also works well with WordComplete.
Aside from gadget freaks and students, I would highly recommend this product to people who have Visors, but no personal computer. Generally, these people rely on a company computer. I would also recommend the product for people who have either difficulty holding a stylus, or have difficulties with character recognition.
