For many professionals, the biggest problem with a Palm Pilot is running out of memory. Luckily there is a solution- TRG Flash Pro, which works beautifully in expanding your PDA memory AND also serving as a place to backup crucial data. Let me start off my stating that this is not for all Palm users. You need Flash memory on your system- which is found on the Palm V, Vx, and III, IIIx, IIIc, and IIIxe series. Visor owners are out of luck (though Visor does make a Flash module). the cost is now only $15.00 (I paid $30 and still feel it is worth it0
HOW DOES IT WORK
Many Palm PDAs have Flash memory, which essentially is a special memory that stores the operating system. It is ROM memory, meaning the Palm cannot ordinarily write onto it, it is a "protected space". What Flash Pro does is tweak the operating system to allow you to write onto the Flash and store programs there.
You cannot write databases on the Flash and actively use them. however, you can run programs (.prc) files from the Flash!
WHO IS IT FOR
Again, you need Flash memory on your Palm PDA. That includes most Palm owners but is not for Visor owners. Handspring does not use Flash memory as it is expensive (in order to make their PDA more affordable they don't use it). Sony Clie's Flash memory is almost all used up by the operating system... Flash Pro would be of little benefit as there is no extra room for storage. The TRGPro comes with a version of Flash Pro and has a flash card slot so obviously they would have no use for this.
It is made for those who want to store programs on their Flash memory. Depending on what operating system you have (OS 3.3 or 3.5) you can gain from 500 KB to 600 KB of extra memory. This is valuable to me as it has increased my storage on the Palm Vx from 8 MB to 8.6 MB... a difference tht has made a HUGE difference to me.
PROS
•Adds extra storage space to the Palm!!- I cannot emphasize how valuable this is to me. My Palm was out of memory until I found Flash Pro. With OS 3.5, you gain 568 KB of extra storage space with Flash Pro. With OS 3.3 you gain 696 KB of storage!
•BACKUP your DATA- As some Palm owners know, if you have to hard reset you lose all of your data - addresses, phonenumbers, etc. With Flash Pack you can backup any database you want. In fact, the program automatically runs to backup your data daily. By writing data onto the Flash memory it becomes "protected" and can be restored in case of a hard reset. Flash memory is never erased. (unless with flash pro you tell it to do so) So, if you hard reset and are on the road tap a few buttons and you can bring back all of your contacts that you thought you had lost. (For me this was great- I store patient data on the Palm and had to hard reset during a call day. Luckily, I had the info stored in Flash memory and I did not miss a beat- I didn't lose anything :)
•PRICE AS I stated before, the price of Flash Pro alone is $15, or with the backup module Flash Pack, it is $19. This price is a steal. I paid $40 and have no regrets. For the price it is at now, it would be the best purchase you can make.
CONS
•Not for Visor owners- sorry folks... that is again because the Visor has no flash memory
•Instability- the only downside to Flash Pro is that it can be incompatible with certain hacks. You must deactivate Hackmaster before using Flash Pro or you risk a soft/hard reset. Fortunately, there is a warning screen that comes up to remind you to turn off Hackmaster.
VERDICT
An easy one. If you need extra memory BUY THIS It is well made and worth what it costs. Again, $15 is a steal for the functionality that this program provides. Extra 500 KB of memory! Backup of data. TRG Pro (the manufacturer) gets 5 stars from me!
