| manowar's Full Review: Brother HL 1040 Laser Printer |
The brother HL 1040 printer is rather sleek and compact. In terms of design, the paper tray is somewhat problematic. I have had a small number of paper jams which grow rather annoying if there is not enough paper in the paper tray. However, it is a small price to pay considering that the paper path is flat: you can print on cardstock and other media with ease and not bend the media too much.
The quality of this printer is good. Text is sharp, as sharp as any Hewlett Packard Laserjet that rates at 600 dpi. Graphics come out well also. This is a 600 dpi printer that far surpasses many competitors: Okidata, Xerox, HP, etc. all have 600 dpi models that cannot match the quality of this laser printer at the price. It is also very fast. Though rated at 10ppm, I usually get around 8 pages a minute. However, I am not complaining as most SOHO lasers are rated 6-8ppm, which often translates to 6 ppm in reality. The quality and speed are wonderful for personal usage. (If you run a large network, look into something like the HP 8000, because even HP4000's 12ppm is not enough for large workgroups.)
For your home office, this printer is perfect. The only hassle for the computer novice is the toner cartridge: the toner cartridge fits into the printer drum, as opposed to being attached to a printer drum. While this is more efficient, the toner cartridge only supports 1000 pages for the starter cartridge, while replacements support 2000 pages. The drum unit will last 8000 pages. Also, finding replacements for this printer is much harder than finding the replacements for a printer like an HP 1100xi. So if you are willing to go through some hassle, you save more than 100 dollars and get a great printer.
