| kasyx23's Full Review: Brother HL 1040 Laser Printer |
This printer came out in Spring of 1988 and I bought it at OfficeMax in Summer of 1988 when it was on sale.
I bought this printer for professional-like printing like for resumes, etc. and very clear and sharp texts. Also I use this for fast printing and good quantity of printing for home owner needs like e-mails, genealogy work, and any general stuff. It has a great design than any other brands that I like about. Very good receiving tray with extension for legal size papers. Price was very reasonable if you don't really need color printing and need good quality of printing.
It also has yellow light display that flashes as warning when toner gets low leaving me about 50 pages left to print. I usually take toner cartridge out and shake it and put it back in to give me an extra 15 to 20 pages to print. It has a total of four displays including this one, plus red one for alarm (I usually get one for low toner, paper jam, out of paper, etc. that can be fixed easily), and other two for drum and paper-ready (green one). I have never seen the light flash for drum in 6 years so far.
You can print out envelopes, labels, anything too.
If you don't really need color printing and need fast and good quality of printing that jet-ink printers don't offer, this will be good one for you.
When I need color printing (very rarely), I copy info. onto disk or CD and take it to my friend's house or copy shop that has color printer.
I have read other reviews about dirt and dust. I always cover my unit with a small piece of towel when not in use. It works well for me.
I have been using this laser printer for 6 years now and I loved every minute of it. It never breaks down on me. I guess I have been taking good care of it.
The only disadvantages are no color, of course, and the other one is paper gets smeared (pure white paper gets little greyed or very lightly-blackened after printing when you put in toner cartridge after shaking it or changing toner cartridge. I guess that's normal for any printers that use toner. It goes away after few printings. I use cloth to clean out toner residue around the cartridge and inside the drum. Also, sometimes it will print out one or small dots. But, it doesn't happen very often which is good.
Before I forget, rarely the printer will keep printing blank papers or leave some garbled texts due to computer crash or some kind of temporary bug to one of the programs that I'm printing out from, which can be a hassle. The only way to fix this problem is to shut off the printer and reboot the computer. That's where the paper jam (as shown below) comes in if you are not lucky.
Overall, I still rate this unit A+.
Under Paper Handling, I picked 4 as jams rarely. That's more for human error than machine itself. Sometimes it jams due to paper mishandling or machine shuts off prematurely while it's in the middle of printing, etc.
