| jierik's Full Review: Canon BJC 1000 InkJet Printer |
Soon inkjet printers will be free with every second pair of socks. For the time being, this BJC-1000 costs you 50$.
The reason why those manufacturers sell them that cheap is that they get you in the ink. I find it really annoying that you have to replace the whole cartride. Why can't you feed the printhead with some tubes and color-tanks hidden somewhere behind the printer? It is a disgrace to see how those cartridges are wrapped in tons of plastic and metal. The environment will not be happy with this inkjet-mania, and the way the manufacturers waste large amounts of materials.
The output of the BJC-1000 is not fantastic. The resolution is average, and the colors are difficult to get right. In fact, you have to play around with the driver and make little test-prints, but by the time you get that right, the ink is dry. Image quality is just enough to print an email, or a web-page, or an article so you can read it away from the screen you spent most of the day staring at. But when it comes to photos, resumes, or a letter of complaint to AOL it just doesn't yield that professional look.
As for standard, black letters, you need to purchase a separate black ink tank, which is not cheap. And the output is not really letter quality. Annoyingly, you can only use one tank at a time, so if you want to switch to color again, you need to clip that tank back in. When you print documents with the color-tank, black text is achieved by spraying all the colors it has on a single spot. The result is a sort of British racing green, with red on the lower part of the characters, and yellow on the upper. The ink-tank then dries out very fast, which you notice first when half of the page suddenly comes out in red. Then there is this photo-kit. Admittently, with the right paper, the output is not bad for such a low-end little printer, but playing around with this feature can cost fortunes as well.
My advice: use the BJC-1000 to print email, recipes and articles from the web, or to draft your cover letter. But for resumes, use your bosses inkjet, and upload your picture to ofoto.com. You'll be cheaper of and get much better photos.
