| pixtures's Full Review: Canon BJC 1000 InkJet Printer |
I went through the same experience as many of the reviewers. I only got about 19 pages out of my $40-$50 colour cartridge when the ink ran out. The problem is the electronic setup of the unit. As you know, the printer has no "on-off" switch. The manual tells you to plug it in to a wall socket, on its own. I learned, to my consternation, that the reason for this is that you MUST keep power to the printer, continually, NOT turn it off. Like many computer users I have the computer, monitor, speakers and printer on the same surge-protection bar so that I can turn these components on together. However, each time you turn the Canon BJC 1000 on, it goes through a set-up cycle, including a print-head cleaning which uses up a bit of ink. If you are a recreational computer user like me, you might turn your computer on and off many times over the course of a week or month, so the print head cleaning function is going to use up a lot of ink. By keeping the Canon BJC 1000 on continually, the only ink you use is for printing. Of course, there is NO mention of this in the owners manual. They tell you not to plug the printer into a power bar because of a possible fire threat. There is print-head cleaning software when you install the printer on your computer that you can perform, as a part of regular maintenance (see the manual). Also, if much of your printing is text, requiring only black ink, purchase a Canon BC-02 cartridge, which is black-only. If you try to print black text with the BC-05 colour cartridge that comes with the printer, it takes the three colours, in combination to achieve black ink, so you are using up three times the ink to get black print. Hence the Canon BC-02 black cartridge. Then keep interchanging them as the job requires. I just got the BC-02 black cartridge, myself. I am going to try it out. Another factor, which they mention, in small print, in the manual, concerns "page coverage". The more you print on a page, reduces the quantity of pages you might get from the cartridge. This might be trial+error. I shall write again when I aggressively use the printer. Otherwise the printer is compact, easy to use, CHEAP to purchase, the print quality is acceptable for my recreational computer use.
