| Broad49's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 870 InkJet Printer |
The first thing I noticed about my newly purchased Epson 870 Stylus Photo Printer was how quiet it is. For a moment or two I had to actually look at it to see if it was operating properly, it is so quiet. My previous photo printer, the fine Epson 750, was quite a bit noisier to say the least. But in actuality, I didn't buy this printer ($ 299.00 at CompUSA) for the lack of noise, but for the outstanding print quality that Epson has become known for in the photo printing market.
I'm just a guy who's enthralled with digital photography and wants a printer that produces a product that rivals ( and some say exceeds ) the 35mm venue. My previous printer, the E-750, was and is a very fine photo system and I still consider it a very good purchase at $ 199.00. ( I gave mine to my sister who has purchased her first digital camera). But as I heard more people talking about the 870 I decided to investigate this system for myself.
I went to Steve's Digicams, an outstanding review site first. I then went to get a demo. What I found was a great looking machine that produces OUTSTANDING prints on glossy or matte papers. ( Ask for a demo with the 870 on Epson heavyweight matte paper....Wow !) I utilize a 3.3 million megapixel Oly C3000Z camera with the 870 and the 4x6's and 8x10's have to be seen to be believed. The 870 produces a finer detailed image due to their new four picoliter technology coupled with the system's 1440 dpi printing and fast drying inks.
The color reproduction is fantastic....yellows, reds, greens, purples, etc......heck......the full spectrum of color is reproduced boldly and dramatically ! And isn't that exactly what we want ? Photos that literally come alive ! Pictures are crystal clear and definitely suitable for framing. In fact, I challenge most folk to tell the difference between these prints and 35mm. It does appear on the surface, however, that this system uses a little more ink than the 750. Speaking of ink, this system has a new ink monitor system that allows you to see the levels of black and color ink remaining in each cartridge while printing. I personally find this to be a great advantage since running out of ink in the middle of printing would be nothing short of disastrous.
My only negative is that a USB cable is not provided, so be sure to purchase one before leaving the store. They also include a Media Pack, which is nice to give one a flavor of using different types of paper, Adobe 3.1, and Epson Film Factory. Also provided were the attachments and a sample roll of 4 inch Premium Glossy Paper, which honestly I haven't used yet....but I will soon !
Two final points....the 870 is the SAME machine as the 1270, except that the 1270 allows you to print up to 13x44, and the 870 is about $200.00 cheaper. Either way you can't go wrong.
