Well guess what fellow Epinionators.... I got a new printer. I was tired of my Epson 740i's incessant banding when printing color, so I had to do a little shopping for its replacement. What I choose was the Epson Stylus Photo 870.
Setup and installation is a snap! Plug the USB cable into the 870 and into your machine or hub and toss the Epson CD into your drive. Installation doesn't get any easier. If you are familiar with Epson install's you may know about the nice little Macromedia presentation that throws some annoying music at you while it's doing it's thing. It's much quieter and irritating to just dig through the disk and find the driver installer (it's a few levels down on the CD. If you're not familiar with how to do this, then just stick with the standard install and turn the volume down! :)
I've printed out some photo for my wallet this evening, and they look just awesome on the glossy inkjet film. They of course aren't flawless, but look pretty darn good. So I'm impressed with this machine so far. The 740i had such lousy printouts I had to buy this machine! Imagine for $299 getting 6-color prints, well you can here. The ink also dries faster on this machine, I think due to the fact that it is applied to the paper in a better fashion. Epson also uses AcuPhoto halftoning so that your can get excellent black and white prints as well as color!
If you are experiencing banding cleaning the printheads and correcting the printer settings may help you take care of the problem.
If you have a home network, one of the greatest features about the 870 is it's ability to network. You can share this printer and others on your network can print to it. Sharing the printer on an Ethernet Network is easy using the Axis 1440 print server (available as an option through Epson Accessories), specially designed for Epson printers.
But my most favorite feature on this baby has to be to roll of paper to print photos onto. There is an attachment for a roll of paper to connect to. It's 4" wide and all you have to do when finished printing a roll of prints is snip the pages apart! Nice job on that Epson! The paper to be used is the 4" photo-quality glossy injet paper, it will give you full bleed on your prints, which I just love. This feature won't replace your 1 hour photo stand but it will give you an alternative! 1440 x 720 dpi sound good to you? It does to me and that's why your prints from this machine look so good!
So that's the good, where's the bad, you ask! Well this printer doesn't come with it's own USB cable. So if you don't have one extra laying around the house, you will have to pick one up. The only other real flaw is that the Epson 870 doesn't do PostScript which I can live with. I have just ordered a Phaser 850 for my high end work, so the lack of PostScrip on this printer doesn't really bother me.
I find the 870 to be quieter than my 740 which will wake the dead. It's speedy and the quality is great. So I do recommend this printer to anyone interested in a decent quality inkjet printer.
