| surfdog4's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 870 InkJet Printer |
I've been using the EPSON 870 now for a couple of months, and although I have never owned a photo printer before, this one certainly beats any out put I have seen from other printers anywhere near this price range.
I shoot a lot of landscape shots with a 2.1 megapixel digital camera, which by many opinions you are not supposed to be able to print 8 x 10's. Well I broke the rule and am printing breathtaking 8x10s on this printer. Everyone I have shown them to has been amazed.
The printer comes with a roller which accepts a special 4" wide roll paper to print continuous 4X6" prints...for me, fussing the with roller and then having to cut the prints is not worth the bother..the paper is also expensive compared to sheet paper.
Something everyone should be aware of is the "orange-shift" that apparently some people are experiencing with this printer..the prints turn orange over some period time (from 24 hours to never). I have not experienced this problem, EPSON claims it is the fault of there new "Premium Glossy Photo Paper" they introduced for the 870/1270 printers, others disagree. THe paper was pulled off the market and is now being reformulated. (I am using cheap Canon Glossy Paper with no problems). Many others I have talked to seem to like the new "Heavyweight Matte Paper" instead, but I prefer the glossy finish (a sample pack of all these EPSON papers comes with the printer)
The printer is quiet, relatively quick, and prints all the other basics (graphs, drawings, text) just fine.
One interesting quirk is the ink cartridges are actually cheaper than most other printers (including other EPSONs..don't know if that will last, but stock up now!)
