I bought the HP 952 printer because I had read favorable reviews in several computer magazines. After much research I narrowed my choices to the 952 and its less expensive cousin, the 932. The output on the 952 is excellent, even on plain paper. Photos printed on photo paper at the slow setting are almost as good as the originals. Text printed in the draft mode excels the quality of print on my former machine, an Epson 660 in its normal mode. I chose the 952 because it is supposedly a more substantial machine than the 932 and a little faster. It has a special slot in which to feed single envelopes and a tray for 4x6 photo paper.
What's not to like. The envelope feed did not work at all with Microsoft Word and poorly with Claris Works. After many attempts I got through to HP technical support. A half hour spent on the phone was unproductive and the tech finally suggested I return the machine to best Buy for a replacement. The new machine is even worse. The envelope feed doesn't work at all and the photo tray either doesn't feed or jams every time. The printer has a one year warranty so I'll have to call HP again. Seldom do I buy extended warranties, but I wish I had bought one for this machine.
I would recommend buying the 932, essentially the same machine, and saving a hundred dollars. Also be advised that the printer comes with two small ink cartridges. These lasted me four months and have now been replaced with two full size cartridges which should last a long time.
8/6/00 - Since I wrote the review of this product, I've had even more problems. The 4x6 photo feed jams every time. Several days ago I had a paper jam and noticed a little spring had fallen off and also a rather large plastic piece whose purpose I think is to serve as a paper guide.
8/7/00 I took this printer back to Best Buy to be repaired. After looking at the printer and my collection of printer pieces, the technician told me to just get another printer, my third one since April. On the new printer I tried feeding several envelopes through the envelope slot and they jammed. Since then I've just put single envelopes in the paper tray and only occasionally is there a jam. I bought the extended warranty with this third printer just in case.
