| amsquare's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Photosmart P1100 InkJet Printer |
I just purchased a Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart P1100xi printer and have not stopped playing with it since I set it up.
It did not start well, however. One aggravation was that the cable was not included, and I had to run out to purchase one (not cheap) in order to start the set-up. I had another problem: the set-up CD was missing from my box, but I downloaded the installation software from the HP website. With those problems resolved, setting it up was very easy via a USB connection. The software was ultra easy to install and I was printing within minutes.
This printer accepts and prints directly from CompactFlash type I and II, and SmartMedia cards. It, of course, prints in the usual way from the PC as well. To print directly from the P1100xi just install the data card in the appropriate port and then follow the easy instructions on the LCD display. You can prepare a "proof" print first and select which print(s) you want to print individually. You can select size, paper type, and number of copies...all without turning on your PC.
I tested the quality of the images generated by the vaunted HP PhotoREt II with enhanced Color Layering Technology by producing several dozen prints of different picture files (different colors, file sizes, subjects, from the digital camera, scanned images, etc.). I printed them all on plain paper and then examined them. I was very impressed.
I then printed some 3 mega-pixel images (taken in uncompressed TIFF format with my Kodak DC290 digital camera) on 8X10 sheets of HP photo paper (provided in a sample pack with the printer). The results were astonishing. I challenge anyone to distinguish those prints from a high quality conventional 8X10 print.
Everyday-printing is excellent and rapid (up to 12 ppm in black and white, and 10 ppm in color). Automatic two-sided printing is a great feature. The paper tray holds 100 sheets of 8.5X11 paper, and there in a 20-sheet tray for 4X6 photo paper. There are other features, such as the HP JetSend Technology by which you can transfer images from some digital cameras with infrared capability, which I have not tested.
I love this printer. I hope that it proves durable, because in my hands it is going to get an enormous amount of use.
