| JEDIKNGT24's Full Review: Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart 1215vm InkJet Printer |
I was looking for a printer that would give me speed, film quality output, and ease of use and boy did I find it! I won't bother going into the specs of the printer because you can get all that stuff from the HP web site. What I can give you is my experience so far. I bought this printer a couple of weeks ago to replace a Lexmark 5700 and to use with my new Nikon Coolpix 950. First let me say that the printer is pretty big and is quite heavy lending a solid quality feel. The first time I printed a picture, I looked under the lid as it was starting to print and saw a little blue light. What I found out was the light senses the size and type of paper in the tray and adjusts the ink output to match the type of paper loaded. Cool. You can also select manually the type of paper if you want. I recommend this when printing on photo paper because some of my photos didn't print correctly. They were too dark and I suspect the auto sensor thought it had a different type of paper in the tray. When I manually selected the type of paper (Photo matte) the problem corrected itself. Aside from that there have been no problems.
The printer is also whisper quiet. I has to look at the page moving to see if it was working. I am so used to loud banging inkjets so this is a breath of fresh air.
The 1215 delivers absolutley stunning photo prints. I printed out several 8x10's from my Nikon digital Camera and gave them to a friend as a x-mas gift. He couldn't believe they came from anywhere but a photo lab. I was also able to scan a 5x7 and blew it up to a 8x10 with absolutley no noticeable loss in quality. It looked JUST LIKE a real lab print.
As far a speed goes, you really can't pay attention to what the Manufaturer claims. A full 8x10 print took 5:02 to print at it's highest resolution. That is pretty good.
The printer comes with printing software that lets you select groups of different sizes of photos. For example you can have your picture on the screen and decide to print a page of 9 wallet size prints or 27 thumbnails or 2 5x7's...you get the picture. The program is fairly basic with some editing features such as red eye reduction (although I still haven't figured out how to change the eye color) and cloning.
The only other gripe I have with the 1215 is that it is expensive. I paid $399.99 plus tax at a Staples. That seems to be the only price it sells for. But If money doesn't matter to you or you want to relieve the frustration of crappy prints coming out of your old Epson or Lexmark then this printer is for you.
