You’ll love the Lexmark Z42. Sorry that I just gave away the content of my review, but that happens sometimes, right? Hey—maybe if I’m nice enough Lexmark will link my review to their webpage and I’ll make a gagillion dollars off this one little review. You think so? Or not.
Seriously, I have nothing but praise for this printer. Let me give you a comparison with my old HP 672C. My HP took between 1-2 minutes just to spool the print queue and ready itself for printing. Then, contrary to what the book advertised, it printed in normal black and white at a rate of two ppm (pages per minute) and in color at .5 ppm. Also, annoyingly, every time I restarted the computer it would randomly eject a sheet of paper.
Not so with Lexmark. The Z42 boasts 10 ppm black and white and 5 ppm color (the Z52, which I wanted, boasts 15/10!). Printing begins immediately upon request. No hesitation. I’ve never had multiple queues get confused and clogged and deleted like on my old HP.
The price is great. For $149 you get fast printing and 2400 x 1200 dpi (dots per inch) resolution. That is the main reason that I was sold on Lexmark—I wanted something that would have good enough resolution to print photo realistic 8x10’s for whenever I get that Kodak DC280 that I’m dying for.
Print quality is fabulous. This thing prints in crisp, clean ink. The only thing to be concerned about is ink smearing since the thing prints so fast and drops the sheets on top of one another before they can dry completely. Paper drops in from the top—easy loading and less jamming than the suck-it-up-from-the-bottom HP method. It also keeps from having the weird double-tray setup that HPs have.
I apologize for the brevity of this review (I know this is out of character), but there really is only so much you can say even about a great printer. As a recap, the Lexmark Z42 features:
~10/5 ppm printing
~2400 x 1200 dpi
~easy to load and install
~instantaneous printing upon queue
~no frustrating jams or deleted queues
Lexmark certainly hit the mark with this one.
Revision
Since I first posted this review, I have bought the "camera of my dreams," the Kodak DC280 (you can find this review at http://christian.epinions.com/elec-review-FF9-3D389EB4-3A22F94D-prod6 ). The DC280 boasts a 2.1 megapixel resolution, allowing photorealistic pictures to be printed right of your printer...if the printer is good enough, that is.
Well, the Lexmark is up to par for this task. I've seen good pictures from digital cameras, but I've NEVER seen anything this high-quality. Just by some glossy photo paper, stick it in there, adjust your printer settings to natural color and highest (1200 x 2400) resolution, and hit print. The Z42 allows 2.8 megapixels to be printed, far exceeding even the resolution of my camera! This is one awesome printer--you just can't miss!
Great for printing:
~drafts
~documents
~cards, banners, etc.
~pictures
~graphs
~most nearly everything else
