Actually, if you were wondering, the "P" in the Xerox DocuPrint P8 stands for its speed ... supposedly 8 pages per minute although my timing has it a bit slower at around 6-7 pages/min. Anyway, I've owned this printer for about 8 months now and overall, I've been satisfied.
Pros:
1. Price: If you look around, you might find this one selling at around $210 on the net and around $220 at local outlets (I paid $249 for mine back then). For a laser printer at its speed of printing, that is a pretty good deal. (Compare with the 8 page/min Lexmark Optra E310 which is priced at almost $400).
2. Clarity: Pages flow out easy to read and there are never any paper jams or other complications associated with printing. A useful paper tray fills 250 pages in storage and the toner cartridge on mine is still the original and I estimate I've printed out over a 1000 pages so far.
3. Shared users: Presence of 2 parallel ports confirms this, although I have yet to experiment with that feature on mine. If/when I do, I'll be sure to update this review.
4. Warranty: 3-year manufacturer's warranty (standard). Many other printers come in 1-year warranties so I think 3 years is pretty nice.
5. Size and Convenience: For a Laser printer, this baby looks like one of those tiny $100 Inkjets. It measures about 12 inches in length and another 10 inches or so in width including the tray, so it can snugly fit in just about any computer desk.
6. Reliability: In the 8-9 months I've owned this printer, I've never had a printing error, which is quite unlike some of my previous experiences. The Xerox DocuPrint P8 just warms up in seconds, quietly prints nice crisp pages of a good textual quality and has so far *knock on wood* been a worthwhile investment.
7. Configuration: I've used this printer at a few different locations and not had any problems but I would recommend that you bring the same printer cable that came with the printer.
Cons:
1. Toner cartridge cost: $79! Yes, by the time I'll need a new cartridge though, I hope I can afford a new printer because the toner cartridge is almost half the price of the printer itself.
2. Graphics: This is probably its biggest flaw. Graphical images just aren't as clear and pretty as how I've seen them in other printers. The previously mentioned $400 Lexmark Optra E310 prints out images much more pleasing to the eye. However, I bought this printer mainly as a "document" printer, i.e- pages of text, rather than images. Its name, "DocuPrint", is probably a good hint too.
3. Networking: To network more than with just a couple users, you require a Network Card.
Bottom-Line: I highly recommend this for college students like me who need pages upon pages of papers and reports printed fairly quickly and quietly (so as not to wake the roommate up) at an affordable price without having to worry about changing toners every couple months. If you'll be printing out graphical images that are required to be of a very high quality, I suggest you look elsewhere.
