I bought the Xerox XJ8C Aug 1999.
The Xerox XJ8C is a high quality/high speed inkjet printer, comparable to an laserjet. It is roughly 1/3 the cost of a laserjet of similar speeds, and better than most inkjet printers. For example, I also have a HP deskjet 520, and the high quality on the HP inkjet was comparable to the low quality on the Xerox XJ8C. At high quality printing, the XJ8C is comparable to a laserjet. The only way I could tell it was printed by a inkjet was to use the smear test, where you wet your finger and try to smear the words on the page. Note: ink will smear while laser toner will not. Also, the dots per inch (dpi) is 1200 by 1200, so there are 1200 dots per inch vertically and horizontally, which definitely gives you very crisp graphics.
For real results, I got the printer to print roughly 8 pages per minute black on low quality, which isn't that low quality at all. At 2 pages per minute black at high quality, the printed letter is as sharp as a laser jet. For color, divide the pages per minute by two.
For those people heading off to college, the XJ8C is much lighter, and smaller than the big, bulky laserjets. (size is a consideration when moving stuff by car, there's only so much you can stuff into a car.)
The small draw back is that the ink cartridges are roughly $30 a piece, while a HP ink cartridge will be about $23 to $27 each. There are three types, black, color, and photo. The printer only holds the color and black/photo at the same time, so if you wanted to print a picture you would have to replace the black ink cartridge with the photo ink cartridge. I haven't actually finished an ink cartridge yet, but my calculations, based upon what I used so far is roughly 250 pages per cartridge of high quality or 500 to 600 pages per cartridge of low quality. This is comparable to the HP cartridge, roughly 400 to 500 per cartridge.
In short, it is a great printer with excellent quality and value.
