| ddain's Full Review: Hewlett Packard CD-Writer Plus 8220e CD-RW Burner |
I purchased the HP 8210 Series External Writable CD-Rom last week, and dedicated my weekend to figuring it out. What I found out was that it's awesome. So good in fact that I unplugged my Zip drive and stuck it in the closet, and have no plans of finding it.
This external model was simple to install, one power cord, one audio connector, and the USB cord. That took about 2 minutes.
The software is dynamite. Once installed, it guides you through the process of either making a music or data CD, or copying one CD to another. It comes with Adaptec software, which is easy to follow and takes you by the hand through the entire process of making a disc. First, I put some data on a CD, and that was simple. Then I took some MP3's on my computer, and wanted to make an audio CD. The only problem was that the software doesn't decompress MP3's into a usable format (i.e. ".wav" files) so you have to find some software to do that (that can be purchased or downloaded off the web). Once the files were converted into .wav files, I burned 3 CD's. The process took about 20-30 minutes per disc, depending on how many tracks I was putting on the disc.
And the CD's play in my computer, my car, and my stereo.
The HP also comes with labels and software so you can make your own spines and stickers to go right onto the disc and in the jewel case.
The cost: About $250 from Staples online, who delivered it the next day, free of charge.
If you have MP3's or tons of data clogging up your hard drive, and have about $250 or so to spend, get this item!!! You no longer need a Zip drive or anything else. It's easy to use and with CD's costing about $1 or so a piece (compared to $10 for a Zip disk) this is the best option. It pays for itself in no time, and you don't have to be an expert to do what you want with it. The software makes it so easy!!
Anyone with extra stuff on their hard drive that needs to be cleared off and stored for later use, should get this. I chose HP because of the name, knowing full well that they stand behind their equipment, and provide solid software that makes using the burner easy.
