The CD-Writer Plus software is essentially a shell wrapped around Adaptec's Easy CD Creator and DirectCD, along with HP's Disaster Recovery (akin to Adaptec's Take Two). HP adds its Fast Format, which lets you begin writing to a still-formatting CD-RW disk after 5 minutes of the 35 minute-plus formatting process. Sonic Foundry's ACID Music, eFax.com's Filing Central, and the Neato CD Labeler Kit are also included.

Performance for this drive was well above average, thanks to its 4MB buffer and 8X write speed. Unlike many CD-R drives, the CD-Writer Plus also functions reasonably well as a CD-ROM reader, as shown by its high scores on CD WinMark.

The CD-Writer Plus is a winner: a speedy performer with a big software bundle, backed by excellent support.
