This is a fast, accurate and very quiet machine. It came packed in a special inflatable cushion in a box within a box within a peanut-filled third box - very protected. The workmanship is the same high quality that I've found in HP's printers and I expect this unit to last for a long time. So far, I've burned a half-dozen or so CDs on CD-R discs and backed up the entire contents of my hard drive on a CD-RW disc. It comes with quite a bit of software, including Adaptec's Easy CD Creator and the NEATO CD-labeling kit. Backing up my Quicken accounts, which used to take a couple minutes with floppy discs, takes about 15 seconds with the CD-RW.
I purchased the unit online from computers4sure. I paid $334 and spent another $100 on a SCSI-2 card and a cable to connect the unit to the PC.
I would give the 9210e five stars, but HP's customer service deserves a lower score. I purchased the SCSI cable while I was waiting for the writer to arrive, but could not find out in the literature whether the connectors should be male/male, male/female, etc. I called HP and the woman who took the call did not know the answer. She checked with a supervisor, who also didn't know. She suggested I wait until I received the unit and then inspect the connectors myself. She said HP didn't have any on hand that she could check. Considering how much PC Magazine raved about HP's service, I was quite disappointed. My next call was to Adaptec, whose rep had the answer at his fingertips.
Later, when I had trouble creating a Windows 98 boot disc to go with my backup files, an HP technician told me I had to have the Windows CD. When I explained that my IBM Aptiva came pre-loaded with Windows and that HP's own directions advised using the ``install set'' in my computer as an alternative, the tech had no idea what I was talking about. The tech suggested I call Microsoft or IBM. All I got out of the call was a long-distance charge on my phone bill.
I love the unit, but dread the next technical question that crops up.
