| onextruexhope's Full Review: Iomega ZipCD CD-RW Burner |
I received the Iomega ZipCD CDRW Drive as a Christmas present 2 years ago. At the time, I had NO idea how to install an internal drive, so I had to have a friend set it up for me. The installation (for him) seemed to be quick and painless, and the installation software seemed fairly self explanatory.
Anyways, as soon as I got the Iomega up and running, I quickly started burning as many CD's as possible. I went on a compulsive music search and tested this baby out over and over again. While using the software that comes with this cd is definitely easy to use and pretty useful. I found myself burning CD's with in a matter of minutes. So far, so good.
Well, the only problem I started to run into, was using it while browsing on the net, or running other aplications. I've found (and still find today) that if I'm running another application or two, my cd burning process will freeze and I cannot recover the CD (meaning, I have to take it and out just throw it away because it's become unuseable). I've also found out that when that happens, sometimes the drive will lock itself and I can't even get the CD out! Only after I restart the computer, does the drive unlock. I've found this to be very annoying.
So, I figured, let's give this another try. When I got my new computer, I finally understood how to install it myself. The Iomega was originally installed on Windows 98, this time around it was Windows ME (ugh). Well, either way, I installed it, and it certainly was compatible. Everything worked (which was great), well, except for those running more aplications than one problems, the ocasional freezing of the CD burner and the few cd's I had to completely toss! Well, regardless, it did it's job for the most part, and that's all I wanted.
Anyways, compared to today's speeds, my CDRW drive is a bit slow. I wish I had a little more speed, as this does take a while to burn a regular CD (much more than a few minutes). The freezing and locking-I can do without. Either way, if you're looking to purchase a CDRW drive, I wouldn't necessarily pick this one. It's good for what it offers, but, the unreliability and slower speeds aren't really worth the price. Get something faster, and hopefully-more reliable.
