| ericj33's Full Review: Sony SPRESSA USB Burner |
I went to the store to buy a Philips USB, but they were out of stock. I bought the Spressa USB Plus instead, because I've always had good luck with Sony in the past.
In the 3 weeks that I had it, I never managed to burn a disk. In fact, my system would lock-up within 10 minutes of turning the drive on. My system would run all day long with the drive powered off, but as soon as I turned the Spressa on a lock up was guaranteed. See TK1528's review for the same problem.
Sony's only solution was to disable all startup programs, reconfigure the machine as a network server, reduce some buffer sizes - all in attempts to free up as much resources as possible. And this is for a machine with 128Mb!!??
If even if the solved the problem, which it didn't, this "solution" is totally unacceptable. It's like Sony telling me that in order to use my new Sony DVD player with my TV, I have to disconnect my VCR, video game, etc, set the DVD player exactly 4' to the side and 2'1" below the TV cabinet, with a video cable exactly 33" long, then maybe the thing will work.
And I'm supposed to be satisfied with that? Of course not, but in typical big corporation fashion, Sony passed the buck to the retailer who sold me the drive. Luckily, the local store was willing to stretch their 14 day return policy and let me exchange it for the Philips.
Their tech support personnel was helpful, but after they failed to come up with an intelligent solution, I talked to the tech support manager. Unfortunately, he was so annoyingly smug about it all, that it will be a long, long time before I buy a Sony product.
My advice is to stay away from this one.
