| tasmith1972's Full Review: Sony SPRESSA USB Burner |
I purchased my Sony Spressa about 4 months ago on the advice of the salesman at CompUSA. He told me only good things about it, and since it wasn't the most expensive in the store I figured that he was being honest. I liked it because it plugged into the USB port, and Sony has always seemed to make good quality products.
Boy am I disappointed! This thing has never worked right. I don't even know where to begin in describing all of the problems that I have had. I know quite a bit about hardware and software. If anyone could get this thing to work it would be me.
First, it does not work with the software provided. In fact, the several different pieces of software that it comes with are confusing, and there is virtually no documentation to figure them out. They have overlapping functions, and I still haven't figured out what they all do.
When I called tech support it took several attempts and several hours to get through to them, and they were friendly, but didn't know what to do or even how to get started in fixing the problem. The burner wasn't even uniform in its problem. Sometimes it would not even begin a burn, other times it would stop mid-burn, others times it would complete it but something would still be wrong with the CD.
Because the junk software that came with it didn't work, I downloaded several CD burner titles, and only one of them would work with it. It is called Nero. I didn't take the burner back because Nero seemed to do an adequate job.
When Nero quit (I had only burned about 10 CD's) I realized that it was too late to take the burner back, so I called tech support again. Once again they were friendly but not helpful. Based on the error messages that I was getting they concluded that something was wrong with it and I had to send it to them to fix. I don't know if I will because I am so sick of dealing with it I want to just throw it off of a cliff. I have spent many, many hours with this thing, and it has been nothing but a giant headache.
I know that some people have had no trouble with this burner, and so I suppose that it works fine on some machines, and doesn't on others. Thus, I say stay away because your chances of getting it to work are hit and miss. Overall I think that Sony has built a piece of junk.
