| jdanishevsky's Full Review: SYQT SyQuest SparQ (SPARQ1AI-01) Drive |
When I found out that they were selling SyQuest SparQ 1.0GB Drives like hotcakes on internet auctions, I got so excited that I bought one for myself, one for my sister and one for my father-in-law. I have also purchased additional disks. The drives ran me something like $49.00 a piece and the 3 pack of disks were like $29.00. This is the good part, considering that they were originally for about $250.00 in the best case scenario and people were grabbing them. Well, I always wanted a large capacity back-up like JAZ Drive, but didn't feel like getting all the SCSI stuff just for that. So, I was a happy camper and I couldn't wait to get them.
Well finally the long waited day arrived. I brought it home and started the installation process. Besides the fact that the software they provide is primitive looking during the installation, there is more. It also gives you an error. Then it shifts your drives instead of putting it as a last available letter, the way IOMEGA does it. When you unhook the SparQ, it moves the drives back and some of your short cuts might not work anymore. Well finally I get my SparQ Drive to work. I store more data, then I did when I had the ZIP Drive. It is relatively fast, considering the fact that it is a parallel port connection. The life is great.
One day, I decide to get the data and put it on my hard disk. I tried to copy the files and it bombed at certain point. So, I am thinking, that may be the disk got corrupted, so I copy most of the files on to the hard disk and throw them on another SparQ diskette. The disks didn't cost that much, so I figure it is acceptable. Well, when I tried to retrieve the files from the other disk, same thing occurs to another bunch of files. And for the record they were all new disks and my SparQ drive was new. Enough said, I don't want to put it down, I guess I just had a bad experience. Oh, but wait, there is more. I went to install it for my sister and my father-in-law. Well with tremendous amount of difficulty, we got one of them working, but my sister is still trying to figure out how to get hers to do anything. Well, at least we got my father-in-law's drive working, but sure enough the file corruption problem was inevitable and a very first time, he tried to get the files of it, he had the same problem as I did.
I am not putting them down and they might have a nice product, but please, how many problems can one product have. They are cheaper then JAZ drives, but as they always say, you get what you pay for. Actually, me personally, I prefer my CD-writer. It is faster, safer and the CDs are compatible on any PC.
So, to finish my story on the whole thing, I got my nice and shiny SparQ drive sitting there, looking pretty and I am using my CD-Writer.
