| RFatz's Full Review: SYQT SyQuest SparQ (SPARQ1AI-01) Drive |
I purchased my Syquest SparQ1.0 gb drive over a year ago. At the time I was looking for a storage medium to take some pressure off my 3.2 gig hard drive. My collection of over 200 floppy discs just wasn't cutting it. Besides, if I needed a file, I had to search really hard to find the right diskette. And parsing large files to fit on multiple diskettes was also beginning to wear on me.
That's when I saw an add for the SparQ drive. I had been looking at Zip drives but balked at paying $200 for only a 100MB drive. The SparQ came with a 1GB removable drive and at only $199 I considered that a bargain. Even better was when I purchased a three pack of 1 GB disks, I got a free one in the mail. In essence I was able to get 5GB of storage for roughly $300. A steal compared to the cost of similar storage from Iomega.
I use my SparQ drive for media backup and also keep all my web design work and tools on it. The drive transfer rate is high enough so I only notice a slight difference from accessing my from fixed disk. And the pass through parallel port allows me to have my printer installed as well (something I can't say for my scanner which is supposed to do the same thing).
I had thought that Syquest would give Iomega a run for their money since the SparQ drive had won all kinds of awards and recognition. However, the company ran into financial troubles last year and now has scaled back considerably on it's promotion of the drive.
I'm happy though. It has proven to be an extremely useful tool, outlasting a lot of other peripherals I have had. I have never had any problems as yet. But I think it's time has passed. Some other reviewers recommend using a R/W CD now and I would have to agree. Technology marches on.
