I bought the Acer 320U scanner about 4 months ago from Office Max.com. With the rebate, I paid about $30 for this scanner. For that price, it is really hard to go wrong, but the Acer 320U has proven to be better than expected and is certainly no "bargain bin" product.
I use this product for scanning family photos to send around cyberspace or for auction products. I don't use it for any intensive graphic or commercial purpose, so I can't comment on the Acer 320U in that regard. I got the USB model and it is 36 bit.
I have found the quality of the scans to be very crisp and clear (The included software allows you to adjust the image to your liking). The max resolution is 9600x9600, which is far greater than I think the average user will ever need. The preview image comes up in about 4-5 seconds and the image scan is also speedy. The scan is driven by the included Mirascan software and ULead Photo Express is also included. I found these software packages to be very awkward to use. For example, when you scan a photo, the default is set to store the image in a photo album--along with about 80 other images. Took me a couple tries to get the software to save the image as stand-alone. There is not much in the way of documentation with the software, so you have to play around.
I found the unit itself to be rather heavy (8.8 lbs.) and bulky. It takes up quite a bit of space on my PC desk. With most people having about a 19" monitor, printer, keyboard, etc., space is at a premium these days.
Overall, this is a great buy for $30. You get a whole lot of performance for a rather small expenditure. For the average user, the Acer 320U is a great buy.
