| jasonw754's Full Review: AcerScan 320U Flatbed Scanner |
If a scanner this cheap can be so good, I can't imagine how good the really expensive ones are. I bought the 320U (USB version) to replace an old parallel port scanner (another cheap brand) which is being passed on to my parents. I've been very pleased with this scanner. It's pretty fast (credit the USB port for that), the scan quality is really good, and the twain software (the window that comes up to actually control the scanner) has a very nice user interface with some good features.
I tried scanning the cover of the manual (couldn't think of anything else at the time) and basically there was a 5 second warmup that only happens if the scanner has been turned off or not used in a while. Then I got a preview image up in like 5 seconds, then once I had selected the area I wanted to scan, my full size picture was in Photoshop in less than 15 seconds. The color matching was pretty good (better than the old scanner), and the detail was extremely sharp.
The only thing I can find wrong with this scanner is that it's kind of bulky. It didn't fit so well into the nice spot that my older model did. It's much longer and a little bit wider. Also, the on/off switch is way in the back on the side, a problem that has plagued most electronics for years and just doesn't make any sense. Why can't they just put the switch on the front???
Besides that, this is an excellent scanner, and I would recommend it to anyone that needs a good scanner for non-professional purposes and doesn't want to spend a lot of money.
