While looking for a scanner, I stumbled across the AcerScan 620UT. The first thing that caught my eye was the built-in transparency and negative scanner. For any of you Web designers out there, you know that a good one of these is often very important. The second thing that caught my eye was the price: $129.00 (not including the $20 mail-in rebate from Acer). I thought I was seeing things. There were more expensive scanners with much higher resolutions, but since I was buying it for Web design, the standard 600x1200 resolution was more than I would ever need. I bought it.

Setting it up was a snap. The USB connection made the job a breeze. I plugged the connector into my computer, put in the CD with the driver, and that was that. I loaded the imaging software and the job was completely finished. From start to finish was no more than 10 minutes.

You can use the imaging software that is bundled with the scanner, but the 620UT is fully TWAIN compatible. All you have to do is install it as your default TWAIN device in your imaging software. I use Adobe PhotoShop. Simply click File, Import, Select TWAIN_32 Source and select the 620UT as your default. To perform a scan click File, Import, TWAIN_32,. The scanning interface will open. You can then set your scanning options and perform the scan. The image will automatically be sent to PhotoShop so that you may edit it.

I have not yet installed the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software so I can't say how well it functions in that capacity.

I highly recommend this scanner for both the professional who doesn't want to break the bank and the beginner who just wants to scan some baby pictures.
